I put him in his crate for the night.

thefrogman:

He’s supposed to sleep in there but he won’t stop crying.

It’s breaking my heart.

Things I’ve learned so far…

Otis doesn’t like Milkbone treats.

Otis does like bully sticks.

Otis doesn’t like his crate.

Otis does like to scare the crap out of me and jump off high things.

We were on the couch playing and he just leaped off. His landing was not stellar.

Maybe I should have called him Sherlock.

He’s still crying. :(

Am I supposed to do the tough love thing?

  4. broana said: yes the tough love thing! he will soon learn that he is safe in his crate, and he will soon find it to be his haven. you just have to keep truckin!!
  5. heyimanna said: Not sure if anyone told you, but a trick is to put a ticking alarm clock (mimics heartbeat) and/or a hot water bottle in the crate with him. He misses his mom and siblings.

  7. lady-capulet said: He probably doesn’t like the Milkbone treats because they might be too hard for his puppy teeth. That’s how my puppy was. He’s now almost 9 months old and eats them just fine. As for tough love with crate training, yeah. You have to be the ‘bad guy’
  8. azziangrl4ever said: It’s always “ruff” for the first night because he’s in a new place. Same thing happened to my dog, so don’t be surprised if he pees on the floor for comfort.
  9. laurenannie said: I put blankets over my dogs crate when he was a puppy (except for the side where the door was) and he liked it better I think because it felt more like a den for him.

  11. kg1507 said: YES. If you go to him in the middle of the night, it’ll just teach him that crying will get him what he wants. It broke my heart too when I got my puppy, but you just gotta do it :(

  16. panbot said: When Ein was a puppy, she would whine and whimper from her pen as well. You really just have to tough through it and it sucks but things’ll get better. Especially when he’s potty trained and doesn’t need to crate :D

  19. elfy-muffin said: We had the same problem with my big dog when we first got him - he cried all night. We started by keeping his crate close to our beds, but in the end we just let him sleep outside of it - haven’t used a crate for a dog since. That’s just us though.
  20. chouxcream said: You have to do the tough love thing. My puppies cried soooooo much when they first came home but after a short time, we just say “Go to bed” and they go right inside of their crate. If you are consistent then he will be fine in no time.
  21. newyorkcityspeed said: my puppy cried the entire first night. I didn’t sleep at all because I was so concerned. it’s just because they’re scared. the next night he was totally fine. there will be a lot of stressful days but no worries, it’s worth it!
  22. sarkasmo said: I dunno, he’s supposed to LIKE being in his crate. If he’s crying in there, he might associate it with punishment.
  23. s00zb00z said: Stay tough!!! Crate training is always a depressing moment!
  24. rackfocus85 said: He’ll get used to it. When mine was very small I’d elevate his crate so he could see me in bed, then I’d stick my fingers in if he cried too much. Now, when we say, “Go night-night”, he goes right to his crate. Be strong.
  25. feelinghellastabby said: He’ll get used to being in his crate. Then he’ll eventually take comfort in it as his safe place (unless you only take him there to punish him).
  26. spastasmagoria said: If dogs have never been exposed to those types of treats before, they often have NO idea what to do with them. He may come around to liking bully sticks and milkbones as he gets more comfortable in the household. I always try again with the fosters.
